For Orbost, recruits Kieran Vickery, Jacob Kane and Charlie Mein stood out with their ability to win the ball and then use it creatively to set up attacking opportunities, while players from last year’s thirds premiership winning team, Rusty Morrison, Finn Donnellan, Angus Joiner and Tom Macalister acquitted themselves well in their first game against open-age competition.
In the second half the weather cooled slightly and both teams moved players
into different positions. The home team had more than 35 players rotate through the game.
After the game, president Royston Nettleton thanked the Diggers for travelling down to take part in the practice match. He wished them well for their season ahead and spoke of the intent of making this an annual event with a return game held in Merimbula next year. This Friday night Orbost will take on Bruthen at Lochiel Park in a final hit out before the opening game against Paynesville, also at home, on April 12.
