Orbost came together in solemn remembrance on ANZAC Day last Friday, honouring the sacrifices of Australian and New Zealand servicemen and women with moving ceremonies and a strong show of local support.

The day began with a traditional Dawn Service at the Orbost Cenotaph, where a large crowd gathered in the early morning darkness to pay their respects.

Veterans, community members and school students stood side by side as the Last Post echoed through the air, followed by a minute’s silence.

Later in the morning, the ANZAC Day march saw returned service personnel, local emergency services, schools, and community groups make their way down Nicholson Street, proudly bearing wreaths and flags.

The formal Commemorative Service followed at the Cenotaph and was led by president of the Orbost RSL Sub-Branch, Carl Turney.

Ongoers heard heartfelt speeches highlighting the enduring legacy of the ANZAC spirit — courage, mateship and sacrifice.

Speakers included RAAF Flying officer Isaac Otte, East Gippsland Shire Council chief executive officer, Fiona Weigall and Orbost Community College captains Jacob Farley and Gabby Conte.

Wreaths were laid by local organisations, families and visiting dignitaries.

Following the services, the community gathered at the Orbost RSL for refreshments, reflection and conversation, keeping alive the bonds of remembrance and community spirit.

Orbost’s 2025 ANZAC Day commemorations once again demonstrated the town’s deep respect for its history and its ongoing commitment to honouring those who served.
