AusNet is planning to invest $3.5 billion to upgrade the distribution network across Victoria, including $263.4m in Gippsland, as outlined in a proposal to the Australian Energy Regulator early this year.
These investments are subject to the Australian Energy Regulator (AER) approving AusNet’s Electricity Distribution Price Review (EDPR) proposal.
AusNet’s proposal is currently being reviewed by the AER, who will publish their draft decision in September this year. We will then have an opportunity to submit a revised, final proposal before the AER makes its final decision and the new regulatory arrangements take effect on July 1, 2026.
From a Gippsland region perspective, AusNet is proposing the following projects and programs to improve network reliability and grow capacity to support growth across the region.
GIPPSLAND
To Improve Reliability
– Augmentation in Cann River ($3.1m). This project involves introducing an alternate supply path that would provide backup to customers in the Cann River township and surrounding areas. AusNet has also proposed automatic circuit reclosers that can isolate outages to a smaller impact area.
– New feeder tie in Newmerella ($3.8m). This would create an alternate supply path which will minimise outages for customers around the Orbost and Marlo area. AusNet has also proposed a voltage regulator to better manage voltage.
– Installation of two remote controlled gas switches in Bendoc ($200k). New remote-controlled switches to minimise the number of customers impacted when outages occur. The switches essentially split the existing lines into sections that can be quickly isolated using automation or controls via our Network Control Room, allowing us to bring more customers back on supply more quickly.
Upgrades Address Customer and Demand Growth, and Support Electrification
– Augment East Gippsland 66kV Loop ($32.7m). Reconductor the entire Traralgon – Maffra 66kV line which will increase the capacity of the line to carry more power, addressing customer and demand growth in the region.
To Maintain Reliability and Safety by Replacing Ageing and Deteriorating Assets
– Newmerella Refurbishment ($14.7m). Replace the existing transformers and 22kV switchgear at Newmerella.
