On Tuesday, July 8 at 10.30am, the Orbost RSL will honour its 100th anniversary, this time in-person.
All categories of members are invited to attend the commemoration in the RSL Hall, at the corner of Browning and Raymond Streets.
Actually, the local Sub-Branch turned 105 just yesterday.
It was established on July 1, 1920.
But five years ago Australia was in COVID lock-down.
“It’s sad that we were unable to celebrate the centenary five years ago. But it’s better late than never,” Sub-Branch president Carl Turney said.
“We may well have saved some lives by postponing the event, back then. Many members of the RSL were of an advanced age, and COVID was especially deadly to older Australians.”
A century ago, the Returned and Services League was then chartered as the “Returned Sailors’, Soldiers’ & Airmen’s Imperial League”.
The RSL is active in commemorating the sacrifices made by service personnel, and provides a range of support to veterans, whether current RSL members or not.
Membership in the RSL is not limited to former service personnel, nor to just their families. The general public is warmly encouraged to join as Social Members.
