Recent East Gippsland local Carl Turney is writing a series of articles that are being published in a nation-wide magazine.
The magazine is TableAus, published by the not-for-profit Mensa Australia for
its members.
The first article (in this month’s edition) is on the different methods of lobbying in today’s Australian representative democracy.
Some of his upcoming articles are: Armed Neutrality for Australia, Australia’s Standard of Living, Sane Prepping for Disasters, and Australia’s Timber Industry is Sustainable.
Mr Turney (who retired and moved to Orbost six years ago) has been in Mensa since joining in California in 1979.
“It’s true that getting into Mensa is difficult. One has to be in the top two per cent of the population. On the other hand, almost 1000 people in East Gippsland Shire could qualify,” Carl said.
“I never thought I’d pass, as I only got mediocre grades in school. And I wrongly imagined it would be the financial and political elite, sipping brandy, in prestigious wood-panelled private clubs.”
Mr Turney is one of just a couple of current Mensa members in the entire shire.
But for those geographically isolated there are Zoom sessions, personal networking opportunities, special interest groups and the magazine.
“There are even a couple of free, confidential self-tests on their website. What have you got to lose?” he said.
