Charles Brice is a well-known news presenter, accomplished hand cyclist and an ambassador for spinal cord injury.
Charles had the dream of having a career in aviation, but this was cut short just four years after his first flying lesson.
He was involved in a motorbike accident that shattered his spine and severed his spinal cord, the injury leaving him a quadriplegic.
Since his injury, Charles has found a love and passion for hand-cycling, competing at a national level and winning six national championships.
He is passionate about educating and creating awareness about disability, in particular spinal cord injuries.
On August 4, Charles began hand-cycling from Perth to Sydney in what he describes as his greatest challenge yet, partnering with Wings For Life, his goal is to raise $1 million to support groundbreaking research and clinical trials that aim to find a cure for spinal cord injuries.
Now two weeks into the ride, Charles has clocked up an impressive 1267.5 kilometres, averaging more than 105 kilometres a day.
His determination on the road is matched by his strong support team consisting of his aunts Jan and Susan, videographer Matt, rotating physiotherapists from physio Xtra in Adelaide and his support worker Dallas, a former Orbost local.
Dallas said this journey has been nothing short of inspirational.
“It’s incredible to see how the team comes together each day to get Charles on the road,” Dallas said.
“He (Charles) just powers through and absolutely smashes his ride day in, day out. You almost never hear the bloke complain.”
The journey is expected to take two months and once completed, Charles Brice will be the first person to hand cycle from Perth to Sydney.
