With several regulars returning to greens, there were improved numbers at last Thursday’s social bowls session at the Orbost Bowling Club.
The weather came to the party with perfect bowling conditions, as participants played two games, one of eight ends and another of 10, with the winners for the afternoon being Bruce Kneebone (skip) and Lyn O’Brien.
Although the weather on Sunday afternoon started overcast and cold, it slowly changed to sunny and mild once the cold breeze dropped.
For a change, social bowls was held as an open pairs event with prize money.
The afternoon was well attended, with bowlers having nominated their pairs throughout the week on the entry list available on the noticeboard.
One of the regular barefoot bowlers, Mick Freeman, was a welcome addition, joining the event as a bowling partner for Greg Rankin.
The format was three games of eight ends, with only two teams, winning two of their three matches.
The tied teams were the combinations of Ross and Lyn O’Brien, and Jurgen Fichtner and Beryl Dyce.
After a countback by the match committee, the O’Brien’s took out first place by one point.
Third place went to Bruce Kneebone and Robyn Kellow, with those present hopeful the event could become a regular feature every month.
Social bowls returns again on Thursday.
DRILLS AND SKILLS
The weather was once again kind enough to allow the weekly Drills and Skills coaching session to go ahead on Saturday morning.
However, the weather that was provided was bitterly cold.
The coach, Ron Hatcher, decided that the bowlers needed some revision on what has been taught over the last few months and went through the basics of delivering a bowl correctly.
He followed this by placing the participants into teams and emphasising that after the delivery, the bowl must not cross the head.
The next Drills and Skills will be on Saturday from 10am.
