As the result of a project by the Orbost and District Historical Society, all issues of the Snowy River Mail from 1890 to 1970 are now on Trove.
This means that people wanting to read or search for information which has been printed in the Snowy River Mail can do this on-line from anywhere in the world.
Trove is an enormous digitised collection of printed material, including most newspapers and magazines printed in Australia.
The National Library of Australia, in collaboration with Australian State and Territory libraries, runs the Australian Newspaper Digitisation Program with the aim of making as many newspapers as possible available online.
Trove was launched in December 2009 by the National Library of Australia and since then, the on-line library has been growing year by year.
Secretary of the Orbost Historical Society, May Leatch, said the society worked with the Victorian Library and the Australian Library on this project.
They also discussed this project with the Snowy River Mail publishers, James Yeates who kindly granted copyright permission.
“While the earlier editions of the Snowy River Mail from 1890 to 1919 have been in Trove for some time, the historical society took on the project of getting all issues to the end of 1970 digitised,” Ms Leatch said.
“This has now been achieved.”
