Today marks the 124th anniversary of the Australian
National Flag.
September 3 marks 124 years since the Australian National Flag was first officially flown in 1901 at the Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne – the site of Australia’s first Parliament.
On that day, Prime Minister Edmund Barton announced the winners of a competition to design a flag for Australia.
At that time the flag was known as the Commonwealth blue ensign; later the flag became known as the Australian
National Flag.
Australian National Flag Day is an opportunity for all
Australians to observe the anniversary by flying or displaying the flag.
Orbost Community College is celebrating the day by painting a flag on their sports ground, measuring an impressive 10×20 metres.
