To say that Bairnsdale-based business, Goodman’s Seeds, has been here a while, is an understatement.
In fact, this year Goodman’s Seeds is celebrating its 130th birthday.
The seeds for Goodman’s long-term business success were first planted when Richard Goodman arrived in Bairnsdale in 1858.
Just five years later, he was growing and selling vegetable seeds to “settlers and others”.
In 1895, Richard’s son, William, opened a shop in Bairnsdale selling seeds and garden products, before it was managed by his son, Keith, then his son John and wife, Dorothy.
John Goodman, who has worked at Goodman’s Seeds for the past 69 years, and has seen the changes the business has gone through to get to where it is today.
However, something that’s stayed the same is the customers.
“We’ve had the same customers for years, but we’ve also had some new ones come through – it’s definitely something we’re grateful for,” Mr Goodman said.
Fast forward to today, and the business is still going strong, selling a wide variety of mulch, trees, seedlings and gardening equipment, stocking both local and interstate brands.
To mark the impressive milestone, Goodman’s Seed Farm and Garden Centre is holding a special birthday sale on Wednesday, September 24, and Thursday, September 25.
There will be bargains and deals across the store, as well as seed, fertiliser and fencing experts on hand to answer customers’ questions.
On Wednesday, Big Bear Donuts will be on-site to feed the masses, while on Thursday, special guest, Craig Castree from Werribee Park Heritage Orchard and Edible Gardens will be giving a talk on soil health, sustainability and
edible gardens.
There will also be a free barbecue and raffle prizes.
Goodman’s Seed, Farm and Garden Centre is located at 591 Princes Highway, Bairnsdale and you can contact the centre on 5152 4024.
