The new cricket season is about to start for the Gippsland Goannas and a tentative draw has been circulated.
The first game of the season for the Goannas veterans will be a home game for the over 70s on Sunday against the ‘Barkly St Mob’, who hail from the Maribyrnong area.
The over 60s will possibly play an away game on the following Sunday.
Most over 70 games will be played mid-week, so that some players could still play in the younger age group on the Sundays.
A possible fixture for the over 50 team has yet to be completed.
In another exceptional effort by Goanna’s players, they 11 of the over 50s in the playing group and four over-60 representing the state in the upcoming National Championships.
In the over 50s to be played in Brisbane from November 22-27, Chris Anders, Anthony Bloomfield, Dave Nobels and Craig O’Brien will participate.
The over 55s are being played in Busselton, Western Australia from November 15-21, with Goanna’s John Daddo, Brenton Howe, Ken Hutchison, Geoff Kinnish, Graeme Rankin, Steve Rogers and Steve Webley all getting the nod from selectors.
The over 60 will head to the New South Wales’ Illawarra area from November 8-13, with Rob Taylor a key member of the squad.
The over 65 carnival is in Christchurch, New Zealand from November 22-27, with Rino Metlikovec, Peter Anton and Bernie Symons involved.
While the over 75 event is at Albury from November 24-27, and includes Phill Higgins and Gordon Cowling.
In other news, the recently Goannas held their Annual General Meeting with Neil Meredith, Ian Gibson and Ray Smith returned as president, secretary and treasurer.
Peter Anton was elected vice-president, with Steve Webley and Ray Floyd elected to the committee.
Other jobs were shared around, with VCV delegates Anton and Ian Southall, social secretary/fundraising Ray Floyd, webmaster Adrian Quirk, clothing Andy Slevin, equipment Murray Moore, Bob Duljas and media Gordon Cowling.
Play HQ coordinators are Rod Jones, Deidre Hunter, Gibson, Anton and Cowling.
