Born and bred Orbost local, Bob Trewin, is 101 not out, enjoying a week-long celebration involving lots of seafood, pavlova and many birthday cakes at his home in Orbost surrounded by his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Bob was born on October 15, 1924 in Orbost, in a nursing home for women and at the time babies were also born at home since there was no public hospital.
Bob went to Jarrahmond School for six years, where there were about 15 to 17 students in total, most of whom were from the Trewin or Lynn families.
To get to school, students would often ride their horses while Bete Bolong kids used to row across the river to join in for sports.
Bob then went to Orbost Elementary School for two years before heading off to Caulfield Grammar for another two years as a boarder – he was supposed to be there for four years, but came home in 1940 after two years because his brother Jack had enlisted.
Bob worked on his family’s farm growing beans, carrots and cabbages, where they were sent to the processing plant in Bairnsdale.
Bob married Betty Wilkinson in 1951 in Trafalgar and built a house in Jarrahmond, they spent nearly 60 years together before Betty sadly passed away in 2011.
Fast forward to today and Bob’s family is still involved in farming, a testament to years of working in the industry.
