“B” grade shoots high

31 October 2025
in Local News

Orbost Cricket Club posted its highest score for the season in Bairnsdale Cricket Association “B” grade but were still comfortably beaten by Buchan at the Buchan Recreation Reserve last Saturday.

Impressively batting first the Blues batted their allocated 40 overs, accumulating what looked to be an highly competitive 7/152, led by veteran Chris Davis at the top of the order, who made an innings anchoring 53 from 111 deliveries, including four well struck boundaries.

Davis was involved in an exciting third wicket partnership with Jordan Ross (35), which set up the score, while Dayne Jorgenson (22 not out) and Jasmeet Singh (11) kept the score ticking late.

Singh only faced five balls and hit a huge six, delighting team mates and spectators.

The unbeaten Cavemen look a formidable line up and they cruised to victory in the 25th over, for the loss of just one wicket, taken by Singh.

Although they were defeated, the vibe around the “B” grade side was much more positive on Saturday night, and a win doesn’t look too far away.

The Bruthen/Orbost under 16s found the going tough at the Bruthen Recreation Reserve against Wy Yung, who batted first and posted 5/124 from its 25 overs.

Mitchell Farley impressed taking 2/19 for the Blues, including the big wicket of Noah Mathers.

In reply, the combined side knuckled down and batted well, reaching 7/59 by close of play, an impressive effort without ever threatening victory.

Samson Clementine was the star with the bat, making 20.

There was better luck in the under 13s with an outstanding victory recorded against West Bairnsdale at the Bairnsdale City Oval.

West batted first making 3/69 from its 20 overs, with the leading wicket taker for Orbost being Lachlan Davies with one, some impressive fielding causing two run outs.

In reply the young Blues finished on 1/102, with Angus Seal (16), Lachlan Davies (10), Peter Davies (15) and William Jenkins (13) all retiring unbeaten.

There is no “B” grade or junior cricket scheduled for this weekend due to the Melbourne Cup public holiday, action will resume the following weekend, with “B” grade playing and away fixture against Lucknow at Hudson Alvin Oval.

In the under 16s Bruthen/Orbost will make the trek to Meerlieu to tackle the Tussocks, while the under 13s will host Bruthen Red at Orbost Community College on Friday night.
