At exactly 11am, on Tuesday, November 11, a lone bugle will cry out at Orbost’s Cenotaph.
After one minute of silence, everyone present will solemnly swear “Lest we forget”.
“Everyone is welcome to attend, beginning at 10.45am, to honour the sacrifices made by all of our veterans, in every conflict,” Orbost RSL Sub-Branch president, Carl Turney said.
Those in other areas of this region are encouraged to visit their own local Cenotaphs and memorials.
The 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month was chosen to remember all the lives lost in all of our armed conflicts, because that’s when WWI ended in 1918.
Orbost RSL has commissioned a new street sign to remind locals of this annual event, at the corner of Nicholson and Salisbury.
“Our Sub-Branch is grateful for the repair work that East Gippsland Shire is currently doing on the Cenotaph,” Mr Turney said.
In addition to commemorating veterans, the RSL also provides a wide variety of support to all veterans and their families (regardless of RSL membership).
Veterans are encouraged to contact the RSL for assistance, free of any costs or obligations.
Such support is the primary goal of the RSL.
Membership in the RSL itself is not limited to former service personnel, nor to just their families.
The general public is also encouraged to join as social members.
