The Department of Environment, Energy and Climate Action (DEECA) has announced an ongoing fox control program across several areas of East Gippsland as part of the Southern Ark project.

The baiting program will operate across all public land in the Snowy District, the Kenny and Colquhoun forests in the Tambo District, and the Red Bluff section of the Lakes Entrance–Lake Tyers Coastal Reserve.

Foxoff baits containing the toxin 1080 (sodium fluoroacetate) will be buried 15 centimetres below the ground in maintained bait stations.

The program will run as follows:

– Snowy District: November 12, 2025 – May 12, 2026

– Kenny and Colquhoun Forests (Tambo District): December 1, 2025 – March 31, 2026 (unpoisoned baits used outside these dates)

– Red Bluff section of Lakes Entrance–Lake Tyers Coastal Reserve: November 12, 2025 – May 12, 2026 (baits placed only along forest tracks, not the beach front)

DEECA advises that there is no known antidote for 1080. Baits should not be handled by unauthorised people, and unrestrained pets may be at risk if they consume baits. Residents and visitors are urged to observe all warning signs and keep pets under control.

The baiting program will comply with Victorian regulations for the use of 1080 and PAPP pest animal products, ensuring risks to humans and non-target animals are effectively managed.

East Gippsland forests are a stronghold for many species that are rare or extinct in other parts of Victoria. Some species, such as the Superb Lyrebird pictured, have a thriving population thanks to fox control. (PS)
