Great Victorian Bathing Trail in Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel list

Metung Hot Springs, located in the picturesque Gippsland Lakes village of Metung, has been recognised internationally for its standout offering, having been included in the prestigious Lonely Planet Best in Travel 2026 list, as part of the unique Great Bathing Trail.

This recognition is a significant milestone for the region and a testament to Victoria’s growing profile as a destination of choice for immersive, wellness-focused experiences. The inclusion also marks Victoria as the only Australian state to secure two experiences on the 2026 list.

The Great Bathing Trail, described by Lonely Planet as “Australia’s steamiest road trip”, links an exceptional sequence of hot-spring and bathing experiences stretching from Gippsland in the east to Warrnambool in the west. Metung Hot Springs features prominently as one of the flagship stops on the trail.

For visitors, Metung Hot Springs offers a tranquil lakeside retreat combining naturally heated thermal waters, luxury day spa and resort facilities, and the relaxed charm of the Gippsland Lakes region. This global recognition provides a timely opportunity for local businesses and the wider Gippsland tourism industry leading into peak season.

“Having Metung Hot Springs included in Lonely Planet’s Best in Travel 2026 is a wonderful endorsement of what the Gippsland region has to offer,” Destination Gippsland chief executive officer, Terry Robinson, said.

“Only 25 experiences were chosen worldwide, and to see the Great Bathing Trail – with Metung Hot Springs as a highlight – recognised among them is truly special. Best in Travel is one of the most influential travel lists in the world, inspiring millions of travellers each year, and this recognition speaks volumes about the exceptional quality, authenticity and appeal of Metung Hot Springs and the wider Gippsland experience.”

Metung Hot Springs is set on the shores of the Gippsland Lakes and offers geothermal bathing, luxurious spa treatments, sustainably designed facilities and direct access to the lakeside village of Metung. With its focus on wellness, relaxation and nature, it is ideally positioned to serve the growing global desire for meaningful travel experiences.
