East Gippsland Shire Council's Business Concierge Officer, Royce Edwards and Economic Development Coordinator, Rebecca Steenholdt (right) popped in to visit Bairnsdale Chamber of Commerce and Industry Secretary, Annemieke Jongsma, and owner of The Book Orchard to hand over her Buy Local sticker to proudly display on the store's window.

Strong communities start with strong local businesses, and East Gippsland Shire Council is proud to launch the Buy Local campaign to celebrate them. Running over the coming months, this region-wide initiative encourages everyone to shop, eat, stay, and experience local.

From cafés and boutiques to service providers and accommodation operators, every dollar spent here supports local jobs, strengthens families and preserves the vibrant character of our region – helping our communities flourish long after the holiday season ends.

Former mayor Cr John White said launching the campaign in November is the perfect reminder to start Christmas shopping close to home.

“Many local businesses rely on this busy summer period to earn the income that keeps their doors open and families supported through the quieter months. Every purchase you make locally really makes a difference,” Cr White said.

The campaign is already coming to life across the region, with messages appearing on digital billboards in Bairnsdale, print advertising in local newspapers, shopfront posters and window decals, and social media posts online.

Businesses are encouraged to display their Buy Local materials and use the free digital and printable assets available on Council’s website – including social media tiles, printable posters and email banners. Alternatively, call into any Council service centre, where friendly staff can assist. A consistent message across the region will help highlight the campaign’s importance.

Bairnsdale Chamber of Commerce and Industry Secretary and owner of The Book Orchard, Annemieke Jongsma, was thrilled to be the first business to display her Buy Local sticker on her front window.

“When you buy local, it stays local,” Ms Jongsma said. “The region benefits when you shop locally because those businesses put back into the community through employing people, supporting community events and providing a personal service you can’t get online or in larger stores.”

Everyone can get involved by looking local first when shopping, dining or booking services, sharing local business posts on social media and using the hashtag

#EastGippslandProud when posting about their experiences.

“Every purchase, every post, every share helps our local businesses and keeps our community strong,” Cr White said.

“Let’s make this festive period and summer a true celebration of everything East Gippsland has to offer – right here at home.”
