The future of East Gippsland agriculture has been given a boost, with Stratford native flower grower Bonnie Hiscock named one of 13 recipients of the Victorian Government’s 2025 Young Farmer Upskill and Invest Scholarship.
Hiscock, who operates a growing native flower enterprise on her Stratford property, will receive up to $10,000 to advance her career — funding she plans to use to deepen her skills in sustainable farming practices, plant health and resource management.
The scholarship will help strengthen both her business and the long-term viability of her crops, allowing her to apply new knowledge directly to her expanding operation.
Announcing this year’s cohort, Minister for Agriculture Ros Spence said the program supports young farmers to build capability, embrace innovation and strengthen the future of
the sector.
“We want to help young farmers and make sure they have the support they need to grow and progress in their careers.
Caring for agriculture means investing at all levels to ensure the heart of every successful farm business,” the Minister said.
The scholarship provides $5,000 for new learning opportunities and a further $5000 to put those skills into practice.
Recipients this year represent a wide range of agricultural industries across Victoria.
The program is part of the Government’s broader support for young farmers, which includes duty exemptions for first-time farmland buyers, business bootcamps, and guidance through the Young Farmers Advisory Council.
Young Farmers Advisory Council chair Clay Gowers, a former scholarship recipient, said the program can be a turning point for early-career producers looking to take the next step.
