CareFlight is rolling out free infant emergency training in East Gippsland this week at Orbost (today) and Omeo (tomorrow).

Following success in the Northern Territory, CareFlight has announced the expansion of its Infant Care Workshop (ICW) in alignment with its Sick and Injured Kids in the Bush (SIKITB) program.

These mobile, evidence-based programs are designed to assist participants across regional, rural and remote to communities better diagnose and treat seriously ill and injured infants and children who are a long way from hospital and the healthcare they need.

Thanks to funding from generous donors, the aeromedical charity will be hosting free workshops in Orbost and Omeo this week to equip new parents and carers as well as professionals including registered nurses, emergency nurses, paramedics and doctors, with essential life-saving skills to manage common infant health concerns and emergencies.

Committed to investing in long-term solutions and community education, the workshops will cover topics including paediatric assessment, fluids for kids, intraosseous insertions, cardiac arrest, neonatal resuscitation and paediatric trauma simulation.

Acting head of education, Tariq Sappideen, emphasised the importance of these workshops and the impact they can have on communities.

“Dealing with sick or critically injured children is challenging, especially in remote, rural and regional locations where access to specialists is limited,” Mr Sappideen said.

“That is why we are excited to be expanding our Sick and Injured Kids in the Bush program and Infant Care Workshops into Victoria, giving us the opportunity to reach more communities. Providing participants with practical skills training and relevant scenario-based discussions to help improve their knowledge, skills and confidence, is vital for increasing positive health outcomes for newborns and children.”

Each workshop is delivered by a team of highly skilled doctors, nurses and paramedics who are passionate about building capacity in communities to ensure paediatric patients are given the best possible chance of recovery.
