A major community priority to link Marlo and Orbost with a scenic riverside cycling and walking trail has moved a step closer, following completion of a pre-feasibility study by the Future of Orbost and District (FoOD) project.
The study focused on the western side of the Snowy River after previous investigations identified significant challenges with establishing a route on the eastern side.
The new assessment confirms that a western alignment is technically feasible and can be delivered entirely on Crown land.
The work also finds that two new suspension bridges — crossing the Snowy and Brodribb Rivers — could be constructed without in-stream piers, reducing environmental impacts and improving resilience to flooding.
Three alignment options were considered, with the western approach recommended due to fewer land access constraints, improved safety and stronger constructability.
The estimated cost of the project, including future design and investigations, is around $3.19 million.
However, progressing the proposal will require coordinated engagement with multiple authorities due to sensitive river frontages, flood-prone areas, cultural heritage and existing agricultural licences.
FoOD chair Liz Mitchell, who has championed the project, said the findings mark an important milestone.
“This work brings us one step closer to unlocking a signature trail experience for residents and visitors,” she said.
“We now have a clear pathway for coordinated planning, partnership development and future funding opportunities.”
