There was plenty of excitement in town on Monday, with a couple of local hoteliers involved in the Sapphire Coast victory of Tanana.
The five-year-old mare was a recent $8000 purchase for trainer Rebecca Kelly and her connections, which include Orbost’s Craig Perry and Jack Welsh.
After earning his new connections $1600 at his first run for the stable at Yarra Valley on December 19, Tanana struck it big at the Sapphire Coast, pocketing her grateful owners $13,950.
Under the guidance of experienced New South Wales jockey, Shaun Guymer, Tanana was quickly in front and controlling the 1200 metre maiden.
It was a case of the further they went, the great Tanana’s advantage, the $2 favourite, winning under grip by four lengths.
The galloper was formerly trained by Melbourne Cup winning trainer, Mike Moroney, who sadly passed away earlier in the year.
Tanana raced three times under the care of Ben, Will and JD Hayes, for two fourths and third, before connections decide to move her on.
She has now raced seven times, for one win and a couple of placings, accumulating stakes of $26,635.
It continued the Sale-based Kelly’s outstanding run in New South Wales, preparing six winners in the state during November/December.
Kelly is following the old racing adage, take them where you think you can win.
