September was a month of high-stakes competition and community spirit in East Gippsland, defined by national titles, grand final thrillers and a massive fundraising effort by our local firies.
Local talent Emiliqua ‘Emi’ East cemented her status as the country’s premier female whipcracker, securing back-to-back national titles.
The 26-year-old took out the 2025-2026 Australian Ladies Champion Title at the AWPA Whipcracking Championships held at the EKKA in Brisbane.
“I knew the girls would come back strong this year,” East said.
“They’re the best in the country; they’re determined and talented. It was really brilliant.”
East said she was thrilled to bring the title back to Victoria and hopes her success inspires younger generations to take up the sport.
September is synonymous with finals football and netball, and the region delivered plenty of drama.
In the Omeo District Football Netball League, Omeo Benambra celebrated a double delight on September 6 at the Swifts Creek Recreation Reserve.
The Alpine Ranges secured back-to-back premierships in both the seniors – winning a two-point thriller over Swan Reach – and “A” grade netball, where they dominated Swan Reach by 35 goals.
The following week, East Gippsland Football Netball League fans witnessed a spectacular comeback at Bairnsdale City Oval.
Wy Yung recovered from a 13-point deficit at three quarter time to defeat Lucknow, securing their second flag in three years.
In the netball, Stratford claimed the “A” grade premiership with a five-goal win over Boisdale Briagolong.
Success continued in the Gippsland League on September 20, with Bairnsdale’s under 17s netball side battling scattered showers and strong winds at Morwell to eclipse Leongatha by 17 goals.
Local emergency services personnel swapped their hoses for hiking boots – and 25kg of gear – for the 12th Annual Melbourne Firefighter Stair Climb on September 6.
Tackling the 28 floors of the Crown Metropol to raise funds for cancer research and crisis support, East Gippsland brigades made a massive contribution.
A combined group from Bairnsdale, Lakes Entrance, and Sarsfield Fire Brigades raised $25,067, while the Mount Taylor Fire Brigade raised an impressive $26,000.
Mount Taylor Captain Geoff Crane was also honoured with a 10 Years of Climb Crew Service Award.
Orbost Fire Brigade’s Laura Tidey ensured her town was represented, participating virtually and raising $1230.
Finally, the AFL Grand Final weekend brought a unique twist to Orbost. On Sunday, September 28, the Orbost Club Hotel was transformed into a live-action laser tag arena, an event developed by Lakes Entrance-based Skirmish Laser Tag in partnership with IronHorn Events.
