The grassy slopes of the Marlo Hotel lawn were packed with spectators and athletes last Saturday as the annual Marlo Triathlon returned for another year of competition where the Snowy River meets the sea.
A staple on the local sporting calendar since 1992, the event is hosted by the Orbost Snowy Rovers Football Netball Club in partnership with the Riviera Triathlon Club.
Competitors tackled the course in various categories, ranging from the serious Main Triathlon to the more accessible Fun Triathlon.
The Speed Demons took out the top honour, claiming victory as the Main Triathlon Team winners. In the individual stakes, Graham Elly, Paul Smith, and Adam Stone were crowned the Main Triathlon winners. Paige Burrows put in a stellar performance to win the Sprint/Main Triathlon category.
Local pride was on the line in the Local Hero divisions. Big Ging and Co secured the Fun Triathlon Local Hero Team title, while team MTA took the honours in the Main Triathlon equivalent. In individual efforts, Clancy Bennett was named the Local Hero Main Triathlon winner.
The event also showcased the region’s up-and-coming talent. Nash Monaghan, Hayden Perry, Jemma Martin, Grace Griebenow, and Ayla Buckley were all winners in the Fun Triathlon Under 18 category. Jemma Martin doubled up on her success, also taking out the Fun Tri Local Hero Under 18 title.
In the open age groups, Bree Cotter won the Fun Tri 18 Plus category, while the BBE Team claimed the Fun Triathlon Mixed Team win.
Organisers praised the turnout and the atmosphere, noting the event continues to be a highlight of the summer season for both locals and visitors.
