A new exhibition challenging viewers to see discarded objects and timber in a new light has opened at the Bruthen Village Maker.
Titled Sawn & Screwed; Cut & Plastered, the exhibition features the works of artists Eileen Thurgood and Di Deppeler.
It officially launched with a free opening event on Friday, January 2.
The show, which runs throughout January, focuses on the themes of recycling, memory, and the beauty found in imperfections.
Artist Eileen Thurgood’s collection utilises collage and assemblage, giving images and objects a second life.
By removing these items from their original context, Ms Thurgood aims to provoke fresh reactions from the viewer.
“While retaining memories of their unique past lives, these reassembled images and objects now require the viewer to look at them in a very different way,” Ms Thurgood said.
Her works range from individual 2D images to tactile artist books and boxes, inviting closer investigation.
Sharing the space is Di Deppeler, whose work is grounded in recycling wood that would otherwise have been destroyed.
Her 3D pieces are defined by the timber itself, retaining marks of age and usage to highlight the material’s history.
“It is the imperfections in life, and certainly in myself and my materials, that interest me,” Ms Deppeler said.
“It is fun, challenging, sometimes frustrating, mostly exciting.”If a piece does not work out, it is redesigned and altered till it feels right. Nothing is wasted.”
