Residents and visitors in East Gippsland are in for a cracking good time this Australia Day long weekend, as five-time Guinness World Record holder Nathan “Whippy” Griggs brings his high-energy show to the region.
Known for his lightning-fast hands and signature Aussie humour, Griggs is set to perform at the Metung Village Green on Monday, January 26, before heading to the Cann River Community Centre on Tuesday, January 27.
Griggs is not just an entertainer; he is officially the quickest whip cracker on the planet.
He currently holds the Guinness World Records for the most cracks in one minute with two whips (an eye-watering 697 cracks) and with a single whip (359 cracks).
He also holds the title for possessing and cracking the world’s longest whip, which measures 100 metres.
While he now calls Mataranka in the Northern Territory home, spending his dry seasons performing there, the wet season sees him hit the road to tour the country.
Originally from South-Western Australia, Griggs’ journey began at age 14 after being inspired by a performer at Timber Creek.
He saved up to buy his first whip for $55 and started to learn how to crack it, but it did take him a week before he got a sound out of it.
However, persistence paid off, and at 19, he packed his ute and turned his passion into a profession.
Now, with over a decade of touring under his belt, he has captivated audiences both in Australia and overseas with his unique blend of skill and showmanship.
