As bushfires continue to burn across parts of Victoria, East Gippsland farmers are once again facing the harsh reality of fire on the land, with stock losses, damaged fencing, destroyed fodder and ongoing uncertainty placing enormous strain on families and businesses.
In response to what is being described as one of the worst bushfire crises in years, the Victorian Farmers’ Federation (VFF) has activated its Disaster Relief Fund, calling on the public to unite and support farmers and rural communities in urgent need.
VFF president Brett Hosking, a fifth-generation grain farmer, said the fund exists specifically to provide immediate, farmer-led assistance when disasters strike.
“Every donation goes to support farmers in need, providing immediate grants to those who have suffered loss and to replace vital infrastructure, fodder and equipment, while also meeting basic household needs,” Mr Hosking said.
For East Gippsland producers already battling drought, rising costs and the lingering impacts of previous fire seasons, the current emergency has brought renewed pressure. Many farmers are working alongside firefighting crews to protect stock and property, while also coping with smoke exposure, exhaustion and the emotional toll of uncertainty.
Mr Hosking said the Disaster Relief Fund plays a critical role beyond physical recovery.
“But it’s about more than just rebuilding farms,” he said.
“In times of crisis, immediate financial help eases stress, restores hope, and supports the mental wellbeing of farming families — giving them strength as they continue to battle the blazes, and then to rebuild and recover.”
He acknowledged the strong tradition of community support during times of disaster, something East Gippsland has experienced firsthand during past fire events.
“History has shown that in times of devastation, Australians always band together and dig deep. It’s part of our DNA,” he said.
“During the worst of times is often when the very best of the community is on show. Farmers need help, and donating is the best way people can do that.”
Over the past two decades, the VFF Disaster Relief Fund has delivered millions of dollars in direct assistance to Victorian farmers affected by natural disasters, with every dollar donated going straight to those in need. Funds from the current appeal will be distributed immediately as direct cash grants to affected farmers.
Donations to the VFF Disaster Relief Fund, a registered charity, are tax deductible and can be made online or by cheque made out to VFF Disaster Relief Fund and posted to the Victorian Farmers Federation, 24 Collins Street, Melbourne VIC 3000.
With East Gippsland once again on the frontline of fire, the federation says even small donations can make a meaningful difference in helping farming families get through the current crisis and begin the long road to recovery.
