Member for Eastern Victoria, Tom McIntosh, visited the Orbost Fire Brigade and the local Incident Control Centre last week to personally thank volunteers for their tireless efforts during the recent bushfire emergency.
The visit comes as emergency services continue to manage several fires across the region, including a persistent blaze near Mallacoota ignited by a lightning strike.
As of Tuesday, January 20, an Advice message remains in place for residents in Genoa, Karbethong, Lake View, and Mallacoota regarding the Mallacoota-Lake Barracoota fire.
Authorities have confirmed the fire is not yet under control.
A NSW Aerial Intelligence Gathering (AIG) helicopter performed a flyover today, detecting several hot spots along the northern edge of the fire ground.
Forest Fire Management Victoria (FFMVic) has confirmed that planning is underway for ground crews, supported by aerial attacks, to black out these remaining hot spots.
Crews are also continuing mulching operations to strengthen fire breaks along existing tracks to the north of the fire’s edge.
While authorities state there is currently no threat to communities, residents are advised to stay informed as conditions can change.
Smoke may still be visible from nearby roads and communities.
Safety advice:
– Monitor weather conditions and warnings.
– Review your fire survival plan.
– If you do not have a plan, decide what you will do if the situation changes.
