The Smith Family chief executive officer Doug Taylor says cost-of-living pressures are leaving many families worried about affording essential school items, with a lack of uniforms, shoes and digital devices having a significant impact on students' confidence and learning. (PS)

As students prepare to return to school, a new survey from national children’s education charity The Smith Family shows that more than four in five families are concerned about affording everything their children need for the new school year.

The 2026 Pulse Survey highlights how cost-of-living pressures are affecting families already experiencing disadvantage, putting children at risk of falling behind in their learning.

When asked which items they worry their children will miss out on, 56 per cent of parents cited digital devices, while 40 per cent were concerned about basics such as shoes and uniforms. Other concerns included school excursions, stationery, and internet access.

The Smith Family chief executive officer, Doug Taylor, said the impact of students not having essential items can be significant.

“Not having the correct shoes or uniform on the first day can make children feel different and affect their confidence,” he said.

“Meanwhile, lacking access to digital devices often leaves students unable to fully participate in their education and can limit future workforce opportunities.”

To address these challenges, The Smith Family has launched its 2026 Back to School Appeal, aiming to secure more than 3500 new sponsors to support children through its flagship Learning for Life scholarship program.

“Sadly, one in six Australian children today grow up experiencing the effects of poverty, which can negatively impact their ability to fully engage in education,” Taylor said.

“Research shows that by year nine, students experiencing disadvantage can be four to five years behind their peers in literacy and numeracy.”

A key focus of the program is ensuring every Learning for Life student is digitally connected. Over the past seven years, more than 14,000 laptops have been provided, but 44 per cent of students still lack access to a laptop or tablet at home. Parents report that digital support has helped 93 per cent of children with their schooling.

Taylor urged the community to help set children up for success.

“The start of the school year is a pivotal time to give children the tools they need to reach their full potential. We’re calling on generous Australians to support a child in need and help create a better future.”

Key Findings from the 2026 Pulse Survey:

– 56 per cent of families worry children will miss out on digital devices

– 44 per cent worry about missing out on educational activities outside school

– 41 per cent worry about uniforms or shoes

– 36 per cent worry about missing school excursions

– 21 per cent worry about school supplies such as stationery

– 21 per cent worry about internet access for schoolwork
