It was not good news for Orbost in Gippsland Bowls Region midweek pennant last week, suffering what could be a season defining loss.
Orbost’s side which plays in division two, went down to Paynesville in an away game, 62-53.
The only rink winners were Geoff Lynn, Ron Hatcher, Lyn O’Brien and Trevor Perry, successful 20-13.
The remaining two teams lost 17-23 and 16-26, the side gaining only two match points.
As a result of the loss, the side has dropped to fifth on the ladder and will need to earn significant points in their remaining two games to regain a position in the top four so they can play in the finals.
There was better news in weekend pennant, with divisions one and four successful over the weekend.
Division one played at home against Bairnsdale 2, with a score of 54-48, in what was, overall, a very close game, being in the balance right down to the last end.
Hayden Lancaster, Peter Coulton, Bruce Kneebone and Maurice Frank led the day with a score of 22-13, well supported by Karen Chenney, Robyn Kellow, Gwen Hatcher and Geoff Lynn, winners 21-15.
The overall win gained the side 12 match points, allowing them to retain second place on their ladder, with three rounds remaining.
Their next match will be an away game against bottom side Bairnsdale 3, who will be up and about after beating Howitt Park last week.
Division four defeated Bruthen in an away game, 47-28 taking all of the 12 available match points on offer.
Jennifer Gurney, Trevor Hawkey, Janice Lynn and Beryl Dyce ended the day with a 27-10 victory, while Lynn O’Brien, Jurgen Fichtner, Ralph Harding and Trevor Perry scored 20-18.
The win keeps Orbost on top of the ladder with two rounds of the home and away season to play.
This week they head to Eagle Point to take on Bairnsdale Golf.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
The knockout rounds of the club’s men’s and ladies championship pairs were held on last Thursday with the finals to be held today, commencing with a roll-up at 9.45am.
The men’s final will see Ron Hatcher and Trevor Perry play off against Peter Coulton and Geoff Robinson, while in the ladies, Sue Robinson and Dyce will play against Chenney and Kellow.
Spectators are more than welcome to come and watch.
CRACKERJACK COMING TO ORBOST
Twilight Crackerjack is commencing on Wednesday, February 4 and the competition will run for six weeks plus finals.
Only three people are required to make up a team, and you can use your own bowls, or the club can loan you a set.
Footwear should be flat soles or thongs.
SOCIAL BOWLS
Due to the club’s championship pairs competition last Thursday, social bowls was only held on Sunday.
Social bowls coincided with well-known bowler Des Edwards 80th birthday, so the afternoon became a combination of bowls and birthday celebration.
Only one game of bowls was played using the Scroungers format while the rest of the afternoon was spent with family and friends in a thoroughly enjoyable celebration of Edwards’ birthday.
Although the championship pairs final will be held today in the morning, social bowls will still be held in that afternoon.
Bowlers should also note that on Sunday, social bowls will see an unusual competition of one bowl fours, where a team of four will bowl with only one bowl each.
The winning team plus the runner-up will receive prize money, but entries must be made prior to the day on the form on the outside notice board at the club.
