From surviving to thriving – on farm and beyond

by

For many Gippsland farming families, recent years have been shaped by more than just markets and weather patterns.

Bushfires and drought have once again left lasting impacts across communities, properties and people. Even for those not directly affected, the uncertainty, disruption and emotional toll can linger long after the immediate danger has passed. Recovery takes time, and it rarely follows a straight line.

During uncertain periods like this, farming businesses often focus on what needs to be done right now. Rebuilding, repairing, managing cashflow and keeping the business moving forward can leave little space to pause and think beyond the next decision. Survival mode can be necessary, but when it becomes the default, longer-term planning can feel overwhelming or out of reach.

Many agricultural businesses across Gippsland know they want more than simply getting through the season. They want clarity, confidence and a sense that the business is moving in the right direction, even in challenging times.

This is where NEX continues to support agricultural businesses throughout Gippsland and surrounding areas.

SUPPORT THAT UNDERSTANDS THE GIPPSLAND AGRICULTURAL LANDSCAPE

For more than 40 years, NEX has worked alongside Gippsland farming families through drought, fire, market volatility and generational change. That long-standing presence has built a deep understanding of the pressures faced by agriculture businesses and the importance of practical, trusted advice when it matters most.

NEX continues to deliver the FREE, Government-funded Rural Financial Counselling Service (RFCS) for eligible clients. RFCS provides confidential and independent support for farmers experiencing financial hardship, helping them understand their financial position, work through options with lenders and make informed decisions during difficult periods.

MOVING BEYOND SURVIVAL

NEX also offers On-Farm Business Coaching, which supports agriculture businesses to work on their business, not just in it.

On-Farm Business Coaching is tailored to the individual needs of each farm business and is client led. There is no fixed agenda or standard pathway. Instead, the focus is on what matters most to the person running the business, at that point in time.

For some, this might be improving financial visibility or tightening systems and processes. For others, it could be managing workload, navigating compliance requirements, or gaining confidence around employment and staffing decisions. The direction is set by the business owner, with NEX providing structure, support and practical guidance along the way.

A CLIENT-LED APPROACH

Many farmers are capable operators who know their business inside out, yet still feel stuck or stretched thin. On-Farm Business Coaching creates space to slow things down, ask the right questions and prioritise what will have the greatest impact.

Rather than adding more to the to-do list, coaching helps break complex challenges into manageable steps. It supports clearer thinking, better decisions and more efficient use of time and resources.

Because the process is led by the client, it remains relevant, realistic and achievable. The goal is not change for the sake of it, but progress that aligns with the business owner’s capacity, values and goals.

PROACTIVE PLANNING IN UNCERTAIN TIMES

Recovery from bushfires, like recovery from drought or market shocks, highlights the value of planning and structure. While many factors remain outside a farmer’s control, clear priorities and good systems can strengthen a business’s ability to adapt, and make good business decision in the face of challenging and overwhelming environments.

On-Farm Business Coaching supports agriculture businesses to move from reacting to challenges to planning for opportunities. This might involve identifying risks early, reviewing how decisions are made, or setting realistic goals for the season ahead.

Small, well-timed adjustments can reduce stress, improve confidence and create momentum over time.

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE, PRACTICAL OUTCOMES

The team at NEX understand Gippsland agriculture because they live and work in the region. Their guidance is grounded in real-world experience and tailored to each business’s goals, challenges and capacity.

Whether you are rebuilding after bushfire, navigating a difficult season, or looking to create more clarity and confidence in your business, support is available.

FROM SURVIVING TO THRIVING – ON FARM AND BEYOND

Whether you’re navigating a tough season or ready to take the next step forward, NEX can walk alongside you.

– And so much more
