The Agriculture Sector Advisory Committee (ASAC) plays a key role in supporting East Gippsland’s farmers and rural communities.

The committee provides strategic advice that helps guide policies, advocacy and programs to strengthen the region’s agricultural sector.

At its November meeting, ASAC discussed a range of issues and opportunities important to local farming industries, including:

– Avian Influenza preparedness: strategies for safe and effective carcass disposal, including proven composting methods.

– Pest animal management: feedback on ways to

manage pest animals

across the region.

– Regional priorities: updates on actions following Tom McIntosh MP’s visit, highlighting key agricultural priorities.

– Water security: exploring funding for on-farm water storage solutions.

– Extension services: addressing concerns about reduced government staffing and its impact on farm support services.

– Gracemere Plantation: environmental and economic considerations for proposed developments.

– Livestock Exchange: progress on reviewing the East Gippsland Livestock Exchange operating model.

– New partnerships: introduction of the Skeene Creek Farm partnership with Gippsland Agriculture Group.

“The important work of ASAC gives us real insight into the challenges and opportunities facing our region’s farmers,” Mayor Cr Jodie Ashworth said.

“These meetings are also an opportunity for the community to see how collaborative discussions help shape strategies that support a strong, resilient agricultural sector for everyone in East Gippsland.”

ASAC’s work helps ensure East Gippsland’s agricultural sector remains resilient, sustainable and supported, benefiting both farmers and the broader community.
