Woodworkers from across the nation are being urged to sharpen their chisels and ready their lathes, with entries for the prestigious Australian Wood Design Exhibition 2026 closing later this month.
Hosted by the Orbost Arts Centre, the bi-annual event is a signature fixture on the regional arts calendar, known for drawing visitors to East Gippsland from all corners of Australia.
Organisers are calling for submissions from artisans of all skill levels before the February 28 deadline.
This celebrated exhibition welcomes everyone from school-age students and enthusiastic amateurs through to experienced professional woodworkers – whether you are just starting out or have years of practice behind you, there is an award category for you.
Ten awards are up for grabs this year, ranging from the Saplings Award for school-age participants to specialist categories including Furniture, Turning, Open, East Gippsland Timber, Tourist Gift, and the environmentally conscious Reuse Reduce Recycled award.
While local businesses have rallied to sponsor most categories, the arts centre is issuing a final call for support regarding the event’s premier honour: the Major Acquisitive Award.
Valued at $2000, this is the exhibition’s most sought-after prize. The winning piece is acquired by the centre and becomes part of the permanent collection displayed in the Orbost Arts Centre foyer.
Organisers are currently seeking joint sponsors to assist with funding this prestigious award, noting that any local business or organisation willing to contribute would be gratefully appreciated.
This year’s entries will be scrutinised by a panel of renowned experts, generously donating their time to the event:
Robert Manhal: Furniture maker and long-time TAFE furniture design teacher.
Ian Johnston: Well-known ornamental wood turner.
Jane Haussenger: Designer of bespoke furniture.
The exhibition will officially open with an awards night on Saturday, March 28, 2026, and will remain on display until May 28.
