Beef producers across Australia are entering 2026 with renewed optimism, according to the
latest Beef Producers Intentions Survey (BPIS) from Meat &
Livestock Australia (MLA).
Almost 80 per cent of producers reported a positive outlook for the year ahead, with confidence lifted across all states and production systems, reflecting a sector buoyed by improved rainfall, stable markets, and sustained global demand for Australian beef.
MLA Market Information Manager Stephen Bignell said the results demonstrate the resilience and long-term focus of producers.
“The confidence being expressed is not just short term — it signals a belief in the future potential of the sector,” Mr Bignell said.
“Improved seasonal conditions and stable pricing are giving producers the certainty they
need, while strong international interest continues to underpin domestic confidence.”
For East Gippsland farmers, the survey provides an encouraging snapshot as local producers plan for the year ahead. Half of all surveyed producers expect to increase herd numbers, with many retaining more heifers as replacements or investing in additional livestock as part of longer-term rebuilding strategies.
“Retaining more heifers tells us producers are thinking well beyond this season,” Mr Bignell said.
“It shows they are making decisions that build resilience and opportunity into their herds. Confidence is not just an attitude shift — it’s showing up in how producers are planning for the future.”
The survey also showed strong optimism across both northern and southern production regions, with improved rainfall, better growing conditions, and a more settled pricing environment cited as key factors driving confidence.
Sales behaviour is reflecting this positive outlook. Producers expect solid volumes to continue into the first half of 2026, with saleyards remaining the main channel for most operations. Larger producers are increasingly exploring direct processor and feedlot pathways.
The November 2025 survey collected responses from 2977 producers nationwide, offering
one of the most comprehensive snapshots of sentiment and forward planning in the Australian grassfed beef sector.
For East Gippsland beef farmers, the results provide reassurance that the sector is entering a period of stability and opportunity after several years of variable conditions.
