East Gippsland’s agricultural sector is facing a dual challenge of biosecurity threats and shifting land use,
according to the latest reports from the Agriculture Sector Advisory Committee (ASAC).
The committee has been briefed by Agriculture Victoria on preparedness for the H5N1 Avian Influenza (Bird Flu). While the virus has not yet reached Australia via migratory birds, experts warned the response would be “complex” due to its potential spread in wild populations.
Meanwhile, the committee is reviewing a significant proposal from Sumitomo Forestry Australia for a new 503-hectare radiata pine plantation at “Gracemere.
” The project has sparked discussion regarding the balance between economic timber opportunities and the loss of traditional grazing land.
To ensure remote farming voices are included in these critical decisions, council is also considering a new travel allowance to reimburse industry committee members who travel more than 60km to attend meetings.
