The Orbost and District Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ODCCI) has committed to several major community improvements following its committee meeting on February 10, held at the Snowy River Mail office.
Key outcomes include the purchase of a new 24-hour accessible defibrillator, the replacement of ageing town entrance signs, and plans to restore a prominent local mural.
Following a presentation on local defibrillator availability, the chamber identified a critical gap in emergency resources.
While several defibrillators exist in town, only one (at Wesley Hall) is currently available 24 hours a day.
In response, the committee passed a motion to purchase a new defibrillator and cabinet to be installed in a central location on Nicholson Street.
The unit will be placed in an area with camera coverage to ensure security.
The chamber is also turning its attention to the physical appearance of Orbost, with two significant restoration projects.
A long-standing project to replace the rusting signs at both ends of town is moving forward, while the mural on the wall of the bottom hotel, originally funded through fire recovery grants, is reportedly in poor condition, showing signs of peeling and bubbling. The chamber has resolved to take responsibility for its repair and will contact the original artist to discuss restoration options and costs.
The meeting provided an update on the Future of Orbost District Project.
Following a meeting with DEECA and Regional Development Victoria (RDV), it was noted that $900,000 in funding will transition to RDV, with a focus on broad industry development and business expansion.
While the Chamber expressed
some frustration regarding a potential “hiatus” in project progression during this administrative transition, they remain committed to representing the community’s interests.
The chamber also voted to sponsor the local Tourism Award.
The Slab Hut (Visitor Information Centre) reported a successful Christmas period with high visitor numbers.
The primary focus for the sub-committee in early 2026 will be the replacement of the bark on the hut’s roof.
Additionally, the recent Christmas Eve festival was deemed a success, with the raffle raising nearly $2000.
The chamber also officially welcomed new member Ella Bache and identified several other local businesses to approach for membership.
