Hunters across the Snowy River and Brodribb regions are preparing for the 2026 duck hunting season, following the Victorian Government’s announcement of a nine-bird daily bag limit.
The season, which is a significant event for many in the Orbost and Marlo communities, will officially open at 8am on Wednesday, March 18, and conclude 30 minutes after sunset on Monday, June 8.
The nine-bird limit represents a data-driven approach, informed by the Adaptive Harvest Management (AHM) model.
This system uses scientific modelling to ensure that hunting levels remain sustainable based on bird population and habitat conditions across Victoria’s wetland systems.
For the first five days of the season (March 18–22), hunting is permitted from 8am until 30 minutes after sunset. For the remainder
of the season, the start time shifts to 30
minutes before sunrise.
Hunters are permitted to harvest seven specific game duck species:
– Pacific Black Duck
– Grey Teal and Chestnut Teal
– Wood Duck
– Mountain Duck
– Hardhead
– Pink-eared Duck
Hunters heading out to local wetlands must hold a valid Game Licence and Firearms Licence. Under current regulations, all new and renewing applicants must complete a mandatory online education program.
Additionally, new hunters are required to pass the Waterfowl Identification Test (WIT) before they can legally head into the field.
The Game Management Authority
(GMA) and the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) will actively monitor wetlands in the lead-up to the opening.
Authorities have noted that specific wetlands may be closed or further regulated if necessary to protect high concentrations of threatened species or breeding waterbirds.

GMA Game Officers, Victoria Police, and authorised partner agencies will be patrolling regional waterways to ensure all participants act in a safe and responsible manner and adhere to bag limits and seasonal regulations.
