Orbost will play Lakes Entrance 2 in the Gippsland Bowls Region weekend pennant division one east grand final this Saturday at the Lakes Entrance Bowling Club.
It was a busy weekend for the team last weekend, finishing the home and away season on Saturday, before playing a sudden-death preliminary final on Sunday.
On Saturday they took the match right up to ladder leader and grand final opponent, Lakes Entrance 2, succumbing late at home, 54-50.
Karen Chenney, Robyn Kellow, Scott Farnell and Geoff Lynn won their rink 19-17, with Susan Robinson, Ross O’Brien, Geoff Robinson and Ron Hatcher escaping with a tie, 14-14.
On Sunday, again at home, the Green Machine made light work of Lakes Entrance 3, winning 64-48.
Amongst the winners were Maurice Frank, Bruce Kneebone, Peter Coulton, Hayden Lancaster (25-19) and Lynn, Farnell, Kellow and Chenney (23-9).
If Orbost can get off to a good start in this week’s final, victory is a real possibility; Lakes are hard to run down.
In division four, Orbost, the minor premier, qualified for the February 28 grand final, with a 48-41 qualifying final win over Bairnsdale 7 at home last Saturday.
The win was set up by the exceptional effort of Lyn O’Brien, Jurgen Fichtner, Ralph Harding and Trevor Perry to win 30-18.
They will play the winner of Bairnsdale 7 and Tambo Valley in the decider.
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS
The Club Championship matches for the men’s and ladies’ handicap singles have been postponed, with all members concentrating on the upcoming pennant finals.
CRACKERJACK
Crackerjack continues this week, commencing at 5pm on Wednesday evenings, players can also borrow bowls from the club for free and enjoy the sausage sizzle and licensed bar.
SOCIAL BOWLS
Last Thursday, once again, saw a very good turnout of bowlers, with visitors David Perry and Lyndee Ostler also in attendance.
The match committee arranged the bowlers into triples with two games of 10 ends, played in cool and mainly overcast conditions.
The wind was also quite strong at times, which made for interesting bowling.
Only one team won both of their games, with the winners being Chenney (skip), Vanessa Frank and Sue Robinson.
The next Social Bowls will be held on Thursday, with bowlers asked to be at the club no later than 12.30pm so that teams can be selected.
