Orbost Bowling Club will contest two Gippsland Bowls Region weekend pennant championships at Bairnsdale Bowling Club this Saturday.
The Green Machine will be represented by division one, which clinched the Eastern Conference title at Lakes Entrance Bowling Club last Saturday, and division four, which will take on Bairnsdale 7.
Division one defeated Lakes Entrance 2, 59–57, in an enthralling area final and will now face a powerful Heyfield combination.
Orbost led for most of the match but was challenged late by Lakes Entrance 2, which held the lead for several ends before Orbost rallied strongly to advance to the decider.
Winning rinks for Orbost in three close contests were Susan Robinson, Ross O’Brien, Geoff Robinson and Ron Hatcher (20–14), and Maurice Frank, Bruce Kneebone, Peter Coulton and Hayden Lancaster (18–17).
The club is hoping plenty of supporters will make the trip to Bairnsdale to cheer on the Green Machine, with matches kicking off at 1pm.
CHAMPION OF CHAMPIONS
The club’s men’s and ladies singles champions, Hayden Lancaster and Beryl Dyce, will represent Orbost at Bairnsdale on Sunday against the singles champions from across the region.
The winners will progress to represent the Gippsland Bowls Region at the State Championships in April.
CRACKERJACK
The popular Crackerjack competition continues this week, starting at 5pm tonight.
Bowls are available to borrow free of charge, with a sausage sizzle and licensed bar also available.
SOCIAL BOWLS
Last Thursday’s session was played in warm, sunny conditions, ideal for bowls.
With a good number of players in attendance, the match committee organised two games of three-bowl triples.
The winning triple was Ron Hatcher (skip), Ralph Harding and Lorraine Hawkey.
Sunday saw a smaller turnout, largely due to post-pennant celebrations and hot weather.
Because of the heat, play was reduced to two games of six ends.
The winning combination was Scott Farnell (skip), Lorraine Hawkey and Dennis McCann.
The next social bowls session will be held on Thursday. Players are asked to be at the club by 12.20pm if they wish to participate.
