East Gippsland Photography Society has wrapped up a busy fortnight of competitions, events and community engagement.
On February 25, members gathered for the judging and critique of the club’s “Taken in Gippsland” competition, with Melbourne judge Michael Walker assessing entries. Each member was eligible to submit two digital images for the set task, one digital image in open and one print in open, with points awarded towards end-of-year trophies across “A” and “B” grade and
print divisions.
The evening also provided an opportunity for members of the public to attend and learn more about the club, which brings together photographers of all ages and experience levels. The society focuses on enjoyment of the craft through outings, workshops, weekends away and competitions.
Club representatives say the emphasis is not on expensive equipment, but on creativity and personal vision. Whether using a phone or a camera, members are encouraged to capture images that express how they see the world.
At the weekend, the society hosted a marquee at the Paynesville Wooden Boat Rally, opposite the library, showcasing members’ work and speaking with visitors interested in joining. A raffle was also held to raise funds for visiting judges, presenters and workshops from across Australia.
As the only camera club between Sale and the New South Wales border, the society also offers remote participation via Zoom,
enabling members from areas such as Swifts Creek, Marlo and even Toowoomba, Queensland, to stay involved.
Meetings are held on the fourth Wednesday of each month at The Hub in Bairnsdale, starting at 7.30pm in Room 16, with parking available via the service road entrance.
The March meeting will feature guest speaker Adam Edward from Broken Hill, presenting on wildlife and wildflower photography in
the outback.
Recent club outings have included visits to Melbourne’s new railway stations, the Trafalgar and Sale polocrosse events, Canni Creek races, an Eastern Beach barbecue and practical sessions exploring intentional camera movement photography.
