For more than 60 years, farming in Gippsland has been at the heart of the Mawarra Genetics story, with generations of local families
shaping the breeding philosophy that drives the program today.
The region’s unique seasons, soils, and production pressures have influenced the selection of cattle with structural integrity, quiet temperament, fertility, constitution, and commercially relevant performance.
Mawarra Genetics combines Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs) with phenotype and maternal strength to ensure cattle calve easily, grow efficiently on grass, handle pressure, and remain sound over multiple seasons.
Many of Mawarra’s longest-standing clients are local families who have supported the business across generations, reflecting the trust placed in the Gippsland community. While the operation remains rooted in the region, Mawarra Genetics now supplies herds in 18 countries, demonstrating the adaptability and constitution bred into their cattle.
“Our focus has always been on supporting commercial producers,” said Peter Sykes.
“Whether clients market through saleyards, backgrounding programs, or processor grids, our role goes beyond supplying bulls and females. We aim to help set clear breeding objectives, encourage steady herd progress, and support confident, informed decisions.”
Mawarra Genetics will host its 2026 Ladies Day Female Sale and 53rd Annual Bull Sale at Longford. The Ladies Day Female Sale is on Sunday, March 15, with inspections from 9.30am and the sale at 3pm, followed by a dinner.
The Annual Bull Sale takes place on Monday, March 16, with inspections from 8am and
the sale starting at 12pm.
Both sales will also be available via AuctionsPlus.
Sale days reflect a shared commitment to breeding cattle that perform where it matters most — in the paddock and in the long-term profitability of farming businesses.
