Orbost residents are being reminded that free firewood collection areas in Gippsland state forests have opened for personal use from Sunday, March 1.
The autumn collection season will close on
June 30, 2026, although individual sites may shut earlier due to fire risk or exhausted supplies.
Forest Fire Management Victoria says updated online maps will identify available collection areas and will be revised throughout the season.
Acting Deputy Chief Fire Officer Peter Brick said safety must remain
a priority.
“In our forests it is important to be aware of the environment around you for the safety of yourself and others as trees may fall or drop limbs without warning,” he said.
Collectors may only gather and cut wood that is already on the ground within designated areas.
Cutting down standing trees is illegal and carries significant fines.
Authorities warn that one spark from a chainsaw can start a fire in dry conditions and urge residents not to operate chainsaws on Total Fire Ban days.
People can collect up to two cubic metres per person per day, with a maximum of 16 cubic metres per household per financial year. On-the-spot fines of up to $814 apply for breaches, while more serious offences can result in
fines exceeding $10,000 and/or imprisonment.
