East Gippsland Shire Council will begin works to revitalise the eastern side of Nicholson Street this March, delivering significant improvements to pedestrian safety and the local streetscape.
The project, which covers the stretch between McLeod and Clarke streets, is scheduled to start in March 2026 and is expected to be completed by May.
To minimise disruption to residents and local traders, the works will be
delivered in stages.
Key features of the upgrade include the construction of 115 metres of new concrete footpath featuring an exposed-aggregate edge.
The project also includes the installation of new garden beds at each corner, designed to complement previous streetscape improvements in the surrounding area.
A necessary component of the
works involves the removal of several existing trees.
Council stated the current trees are causing significant damage to the
footpath and pose a serious safety hazard to pedestrians.
Feedback from the community and local traders has confirmed the need
for the removal to ensure a safer
walking environment.
Council has committed to planting replacement street trees selected to blend seamlessly with the existing streetscape.
To protect the new infrastructure,
root barriers will be installed around the new plantings.
During construction, there will be temporary closures of some parking spaces, and traffic management will be in place.
Council is currently working with nearby businesses to ensure access is maintained throughout the project.
Residents and visitors are encouraged to follow all onsite signage for safety.
For those wishing to view the
project in more detail, the design plans are available on the YourSay East
Gippsland website.
