Stormwater feedback now open

by
15 March 2026
in Local News

East Gippsland Shire Council is progressing work on a Stormwater Management Plan to guide how stormwater is managed, and communities are invited to share their local knowledge to inform the development of the plan.

The plan is being developed through a staged process, which began with a detailed internal review of existing drainage data, assumptions and known gaps. This work brought together experience and expertise across the organisation to build a picture of current conditions and risks.

Council is now seeking community feedback. This local knowledge can be lived experience of drainage or stormwater issues, frequency of events, impacts, and practical ways to address stormwater issues that could go beyond building new infrastructure.

Mayor Cr Jodie Ashworth said stormwater planning was becoming increasingly important as rainfall patterns change and infrastructure ages.

“Stormwater isn’t just about drains – it affects roads, homes, parks and our waterways,” Cr Ashworth said.

“This plan is about understanding where the pressure points are now and planning ahead, so communities are safer and better prepared.”

Face-to-face sessions are planned in Bairnsdale, Buchan, Cann River, Lakes Entrance, Mallacoota, Orbost, Omeo and Paynesville from March 6-24.

An online survey is now open on council’s YourSay page or provide feedback at any council service centre.

There is also a mapping tool on council’s website that lets residents drop a ‘pin’ on the area where they have experienced a stormwater issue.

Feedback will be open until 12pm Wednesday, March 25.

Cr Ashworth said this local input will play a critical role in informing the plan.

“People know where water pools, where flooding happens, and where systems struggle. Listening to those experiences helps council make better-informed decisions,” Cr Ashworth said.
