The annual Loch Sport Fishing Association King George Whiting Challenge concluded recently, with more than 15 boats heading out onto the Gippsland Lakes in search of the prized fish.
Victoria Fisheries Authority scientists had warned at a September forum at Peli’s in Loch Sport that this summer would be a poor season for King George whiting – a prediction that proved accurate. Only one legal-sized fish, measuring 28 centimetres, was caught, securing Steve McKiernan the win aboard a boat skippered by Glen Mason.
Despite the slow catch, participants enjoyed a fantastic day on the water. Back at Peli’s, the crew gathered for presentations accompanied by plenty of banter, beer, and burgers.
The scientists’ outlook for the future is more promising, predicting that next summer could mark the first of three strong seasons for King George whiting in the Gippsland Lakes.
