East Gippsland Shire Council is encouraging residents to recognise the volunteers who help make the region a vibrant and caring community as National Volunteer Week approaches.
Running from May 18-24, the annual celebration carries the 2026 theme “Your Year to Volunteer”, acknowledging the contribution of current volunteers while encouraging others to discover the value of giving back.
Mayor Cr Jodie Ashworth said East Gippsland had a strong culture of volunteering.
“With almost one in five residents volunteering, East Gippsland stands out for its generosity and community spirit,” Cr Ashworth said.
“Volunteers support everything from sport and culture to wellbeing, education and environmental care. Their efforts create lasting positive change.”
This year’s National Volunteer Week also coincides with the United Nations’ International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development, highlighting the role volunteers play in building resilient and sustainable communities.
As part of the recognition, council is encouraging nominations for the East Gippsland Volunteer Honour Roll, which celebrates individuals who have made a positive difference through volunteering. Inductees for 2026 will be acknowledged during National Volunteer Week.
“Recognition matters,” Cr Ashworth said. “The Honour Roll is one way we can say thank you to the people who help our communities thrive.”
Nominations for the Honour Roll are open year-round. For more information or to submit a nomination, visit Council’s website, pick up a form from a Council customer service centre, or contact the Customer Service Centre.
