The CFA’s ‘Vols on Hols’ program will continue throughout the Easter school holidays, providing extra fire response support to popular holiday towns
across Victoria.
The pilot initiative, which has successfully run each summer since its launch in Mallacoota in 2023, was expanded this year to include eight additional locations, giving volunteer brigades the capacity to respond effectively during peak tourist periods.
The program now operates in Mallacoota, Toorloo, Omeo, Metung, and Marlo in CFA District 11, and Seaspray, Port Albert, Dargo, and Licola in District 10. These towns were selected for their popularity during holidays and long weekends,
when populations can swell
by thousands.
Drew Stockton, a volunteer from Edithvale Fire Brigade who has assisted Mallacoota Fire Brigade through the program since its inception, said the initiative allows him to help the community while on holiday.
“We have been holidaying in Mallacoota for about ten years,” Drew said. “I want to know that if something were to happen, I could be there to help. I can contribute my skills and experience as a CFA firefighter, even while on holiday. The program makes it easy to bring your gear along and step in if needed.”
Deputy Chief Officer for the South East region, Trevor Owen, said the program provides a
critical capacity boost during
busy periods.
“These areas attract large numbers of visitors, and combined with challenging conditions, it’s reassuring to have additional firefighters available,” he said.
“We understand volunteers are on holiday to spend time with family or enjoy recreational activities, but many are eager to assist local brigades. Any brigade involved in the program appreciates the extra hands during
peak times.”
The ‘Vols on Hols’ program continues to strengthen community safety by ensuring more boots on the ground in key holiday destinations across Gippsland and southern Victoria.
