After years of hopeful whispers, highway rumors, and spirited local debates, the global fast-food giant McDonald’s has officially confirmed it will be opening
its first restaurant in Orbost in the near future.
The announcement marks a significant turning point for the East Gippsland town, representing what many locals are already calling the most notable development for the region in recent memory.
For a community long accustomed to planning evening meals around bakery closing times or the local pub’s kitchen hours, the arrival of 24/7 service and the iconic Golden Arches is set to be a game-changer for both residents and highway travellers.
Store manager April Foolsey said the project is moving forward rapidly, with a grand opening event expected to draw crowds from across the district.
“We’ve had people asking for a long time if a McDonald’s in Orbost was just a prank or a local legend,” Ms Foolsey said.
“But I can confirm, this is 100 per cent real. The only joke now will be how many locals claim they’re ‘just popping in for a coffee’ but leave with a full bag of burgers.”
The new development is expected to bring a surge of activity to the town.
Early interest suggests the drive-thru may become a tourist attraction in its own right, with traffic levels potentially rivalling long-weekend holiday peaks.
While many residents remain loyal to their traditional local favourites, there is a growing sense of excitement regarding the convenience of the new facility.
From spontaneous soft-serve runs to late-night nuggets, the 24/7 availability is expected to provide a new level of flexibility for the local economy.
As one resident noted during the announcement: “We’ve made it. This really puts Orbost on the map.”
In a final piece of good news for dessert lovers, management has indicated that the ice cream machine is slated to be fully operational for the launch – a feature locals are being encouraged to enjoy as soon as the doors open.
Further details regarding the exact opening date and local recruitment opportunities are expected to be released in the coming weeks.
