Cycling enthusiasts and adventurers are gearing up for the upcoming Great East Trail Ride, a fully supported multi–day cycling journey along the scenic East Gippsland Rail Trail and Gippsland Lakes Discovery Trail from Thursday, April 9 to Monday, April 13.
The event, widely regarded as one of the premier rail trail experiences in rural Victoria, promises participants an immersive blend of outdoor exploration, local hospitality and unforgettable scenery.
Organised by Snowy River Cycling, the Great East Trail Ride offers riders four nights of camaraderie and three full days of guided cycling along gentle, undulating trail sections that wind through lush forests, tranquil farmland and charming East Gippsland towns.
Unlike competitive cycling events, this ride emphasises enjoyment and accessibility. The route covers approximately 30–40 kilometres per day, making it suitable for riders of a range of fitness levels. Most participants — many of whom are over 40 — relish the opportunity to slow down, absorb the sights and enjoy the shared experience of exploring the trail at their own pace.
Based at Mingling Waters in Nowa Nowa, the event provides a ready–set campsite for all four nights, meaning riders return each night to the same base to relax, socialise and take in the local atmosphere without the hassle of searching for new accommodation.
One of the key features of the Great East Trail Ride is its comprehensive support infrastructure. The entry package includes:
– All meals from Thursday night through to Monday breakfast
– Friendly support crew and guide riders
– Route maps, daily briefings and local insights
– Backup vehicle and first–aid support
– Evening entertainment and community talks
Local produce and regional culture are also woven into the experience, with organisers highlighting partnerships with East Gippsland businesses such as Tambo Valley honey producers and nearby wineries. These collaborations allow riders to enjoy authentic flavours and discover the wider region beyond the trail itself.
The Great East Trail Ride has quickly gained a reputation as a must–do event for rail trail lovers across Australia. Past rides have drawn participants from interstate, with riders celebrating not just the cycling but the supportive and social nature of the event. From communal meals and trivia nights to campfire gatherings and shared sunset views, the Trail Ride blends adventure with connection.
Organisers cap participant numbers to maintain a personalised experience, encouraging early booking as spaces fill fast. The April ride also acts as a springboard for the next session in October, which offers another chance to explore the trail in slightly different seasonal conditions.
The East Gippsland Rail Trail itself follows the route of the former Gippsland railway line, extending from Bairnsdale to Orbost and offering more than 96 kilometres of mostly easy–to–ride surface through coastal plains, farmland and bushland — a living tribute to the region’s rail heritage.
For those seeking an active yet relaxed way to experience East Gippsland — be it with a partner, as a solo adventure, or with friends — the Great East Trail Ride provides a compelling package of cycling, community and discovery over one of Victoria’s most picturesque rail corridors.
Registrations are open now for the April 2026 ride, with early bird pricing available and bike hire options to suit varying levels of riding experience.
