As the Orbost community prepares for the reunion of former Shire of Orbost staff and councillors and a 30-year anniversary for Orbost Civil & Civic P/L on May 2, the spotlight has turned to Peter Murray, a man whose career, both within local government and as a private contractor has left a visible mark on the region’s landscape.
Peter’s journey began as a qualified mechanic, a skill set he brought to the former Shire of Orbost.
During his years as part of the shire’s workshop staff, he earned a reputation as a reliable get-on-with-the-job operator who never compromised on quality or safety.
His tenure in the workshop continued until the municipal amalgamations, which saw the creation of the East Gippsland Shire.
Following the transition, Peter pivoted into the private sector, establishing his own company, P&M Murray Contracting.
Taking the high standards he honed in the workshop into the field, his company became a staple of the region’s maintenance, particularly across local Parks and Gardens.
Community members and former colleagues recall that Peter’s work often went well above the minimum requirements of his contracts.
He famously viewed the appearance of local townships during public holidays as a personal challenge, striving to ensure every park and streetscape looked its best for residents and visitors alike.
This dedication extended to the quality and reach of his seasonal roadside slashing, a vital task for both aesthetics and safety.
Beyond his professional life, Peter has remained a stalwart of the community, contributing years of voluntary service to the Orbost Fire Brigade.
The Murray family name is synonymous with local leadership.
Peter’s mother, Brenda Murray, remains one of the region’s most prominent figures in local government history.
Brenda served as a councillor for the Shire of Orbost for many years, including three terms as president.
Following the 1994 amalgamations, she made history as the inaugural mayor of the East Gippsland Shire.
Organisers and friends are hopeful that Peter will be joined by Brenda at the upcoming reunion to celebrate the family’s enduring legacy of service to the district.
