RSL Victoria State President Mark Schröffel and chief executive officer Sue Cattermole completed a two day visit to East Gippsland last Wednesday and Thursday, meeting with RSL sub branches.
Orbost RSL sub branch president Carl Turney made the trip to Lakes Entrance to meet with the executive and discuss and put forward issues relevant to his club.
As Shadow Minister for Veterans, Tim Bull coordinated the visit and escorted the delegation, as well as introducing them to local RSL Sub Branch executives and members.
The group visited Heyfield, Maffra, Sale, Stratford and Briagolong on the first day, then Bairnsdale, Paynesville, Metung and Lakes Entrance on the second day.
“It was an opportunity for the RSL president and CEO to meet the people, the volunteers behind the scenes, to hear issues and outline their plans,” Mr Bull said.
Mr Schroffel agreed saying it gave them time to discuss with committees what and how they can be supported.
“Many smaller towns see RSL membership dwindling, it is a demographic crisis and with an ageing population members are not being replaced,” he said.
“We are gathering large and small club’s opinions, not dictating to them, and being mindful is important. Mindful of their heritage and connection and respecting that.
“We want to ensure support goes to where it is needed to go as every place is different. This visit has shown the enthusiasm for the organisation and has been well received. We are working hard to improve communications and are finding members are interested.
Mr Schroffel concluded by stating, “We can lead, but people can make it happen.”
